After successfully installing the Proform Professional Software you will have an icon like below on your desktop, double click the icon to start the software.
When you run the software there will be an information box in the middle of the screen, which shows you the status of the software while it is loading. If this is a software update then the software may take up to 5 minutes to load.
Once the software as started the main screen will appear.
Click here for a video tour of the main screen
Once started you will be presented with a welcome screen which gives a little information about the software
This screen also shows the Database status which is how up-to-date your database is for declarations and results.
At anytime you can click the button to the right of the Database status or the Update Data button at the bottom of the left-hand sidebar and the software will then automatically download any data needed to update the database direct from Proform's data server, if there is no new data to download then the software will let you know.
The best time to check for declarations downloads is from around 4-5pm each day and for results downloads between 9-10am in a morning.
If you do not download the data for a few days then the software will catch up with all data needed the next time you do a data update, note though that the longer you leave it the longer it will take to download and import the data.
All grids in the program work consistently. They remember their sort order from when they were last viewed. You can sort a grid by any column by clicking on the grey column header. Click again to reverse the sort order.
Column widths are also saved. If you prefer to let the program work out what widths the grid needs, right click on the grey column heading, and choose 'Auto-resize column widths'.
You can drag a column to a different position in the grid, and it will remember that too. Drag by holding down the left mouse button on a grey column heading, and moving the mouse to where you want the column to be.
Most features which allow you to look at data in more detail (i.e. you see a race name listed but want to look at the racecard and form for it), are accessed by double-clicking inside a grid.
A pop-up menu then lets you choose what aspect of the selected grid row to look at further, i.e. Race, Course, Jockey, Horse or Trainer.
It is important that you can backup and restore any user data or settings you have chosen, this section explains how to do that.
You can enter the backup restore utility from either the button on the sidebar or from the options menu at the top.
Here is a screenshot of the backup/restore utility and then a explanation of how it works.
To backup your data just click the Backup All Data button and the software will backup everything in one go. A backup supersedes the previous backup i.e. the previous backup is deleted and the new one replaces it entirely.
You can
then use the Restore ALL Data button to restore all your data in one go
This will first remove any data already there and then restore in full from
your last backup.
You can use the separate buttons to restore individual parts of your data.
After Backing up the database you can transfer your backed up data to a CD or memory stick to transfer to your second PC, here is how :-
Choose Shutdown and Exit from the File menu in the
top left.
This will close the database and exit the software.
Now use My Computer to browse to the folder
C:\Program Files\Proform\database
The two files you need to copy away are:-
BACKUP_PRODB_Data.MDF and
BACKUP_PRODB_Log.LDF
Now to restore to your 2nd PC shutdown the database on the 2nd PC like above
and then copy the saved files over the top of the ones in the
C:\Program Files\Proform\database on the 2nd PC.
Now run the software and do a full restore.
One way to view the race cards for Today or Tomorrow is to use the calendar to select a race.
The calendar screen is integral to the software in that you use this as one way to get to the past race results and for future declarations. After clicking the calendar button you will be presented with a calendar on the left and below this the fixtures for the next few days, on the right will be the races for the selected day or meeting on the left.
All the columns can be sorted and to get to a race just double click on a race name and on the resulting menu click the race name.
Click here for a video tour of how to select a race card from the calendar screen
A second way to view the race cards for Today or Tomorrow is to use the drop down list to select a race.
Click here for a video tour of how to select a race card from the drop down list
The data view is the most important part of the software.
The tutorial is split into various parts but first a quick overview of the data view screen.
The data view is the main part of the software, from here you can see racecards, results, pattern matcher, graph and much more.
The left side of the data view gives you an history of what you have viewed previously and you can click any of these to flick back to what you was viewing.
If you have a race selected then the horses in the race are at the bottom left with ticks against them, you can un-tick an horse to remove it from the graph and lowlight it on the racecard screen.
The right side of the data view is for all the main data screens for the race or horse you are viewing.
Part 1 - Navigating around the Data View screen
The first part is an overview of how to navigate around the data view screen, how to size and hide columns, how to sort columns and much more.
Click here for the video tour of the Data View Tutorial Part 1
Part 2 - Race Card
The second part is a tour of the race card screen and how to highlight top rated horses on the race card.
Click here for the video tour of the Data View Tutorial Part 2
This shows the race card for the selected race if the race is in the future or it shows the result of the race if it is a race in the past.
You can double click a horse, trainer or jockey to drill sown to individual stats.
Part 3 - Graph View
The third part is a quick tour of the Graph View screen.
Click here for the video tour of the Data View Tutorial Part 3
The graph view is a view of the speed ratings of all horses in the race and initially starts at the bottom of the screen but can be moved to the top by using the Blue up and down arrows in the middle of the screen, in fact any tab of data can be moved to the bottom or top of the screen, thus giving you a flexible decision on what data tabs to view at the top and bottom when you are looking at each horse.
Part 4 - Horse and Race Notes
The fourth part is a tour of how to enter horse and race notes and how to shortlist a horse into the horse watcher.
Click here for the video tour of the Data View Tutorial Part 4
You can enter data straight into the database for each horse from this screen, you can also shortlist the horse as a horse to watch.
Part 5 - Prior Form
The fifth part of the data view tour is a look at the Prior Form screen and an explanation of each field on the screen.
Click here for the video tour of the Data View Tutorial Part 5
This shows all horses on the same screen and all their past results, all the columns are sortable, sizeable and moveable, you can also right click on any result line to get a summary screen in a floating window, also if you double-click any line you get a pop-up menu giving you the choice of looking at the horse or race in detail or the jockey, trainer and course stats.
Part 6 - Horse Form
The sixth part of the data view tour is a look at the Horse Form screen and an explanation of each field on the screen.
Click here for the video tour of the Data View Tutorial Part 6
This shows you the full summary form for the selected horse, all the columns are sortable, sizeable and moveable, you can also right click on any result line to get a summary screen in a floating window, also if you double-click any line you get a pop-up menu giving you the choice of looking at the race in detail or the jockey, trainer and course stats.
From this screen you can also shortlist the horse you are looking at using the Shortlist button above the columns.
The seventh part of the data view tour is a look at the Pattern Matcher screen and an explanation of each field on the screen.
Click here for the video tour of the Data View Tutorial Part 7
This screens shows a breakdown of the selected horses form using all available data fields, this is extremely useful in finding a horses trends or patterns.
This screen shows the collateral form for the selected horse or all horses when they have met other runners in this race.
The ninth part of the data view tour is a look at the race results screen and an explanation of each field on the screen.
Before you view the video tour there is an important point to note about the race results.
The speed ratings shown and in fact all items that were on the racecard are still the same values, what we mean is you can go back to any result over the 8 year span of the database and still research the race as if it had not been run.
You can set filters etc and all the form will be from prior to the date of the race you are viewing.
Click here for the video tour of the Data View Tutorial Part 9
You can double click a horse, trainer or jockey to drill down to individual stats.
The tenth part of the data view tour is a look at the Post Form Screen and an explanation of each field on the screen.
Click here for the video tour of the Data View Tutorial Part 10
This screen shows all the form of the runners in future events since the race result you are looking at, so obviously if you are looking at a race in the future then this screen will be blank, but if you are viewing a race from say a month ago then this screens shows how each horse as faired since that race.
Part 11 - Favourite and Pace Statistics
The eleventh part of the data view tour is a look at the Favourite and Pace statistics and an explanation of each field on the screen.
Click here for the video tour of the Data View Tutorial Part 11
The middle part of the data view screen contains stats on how favourites have faired in similar types of races at the track and you can also view the pace stats for this type of race by clicking the double right chevrons (>>) on the middle right side of the data view. This shows you the pace stats for horses that lead, run prominent or are held up in their races for this distance of race at this track. You get the wins to runs the impact value and the profit/loss to ?1 stake, impact values above 1 or better than below 1, using these pace stats in conjunction with the pace ratings and percentage on the race card screen can give some outstanding insights into how the race will be run and won.
At the top of the data view screen are some simple filters.
There are two parts to the filters the first allows you to filter out just wins or wins and places or all, just click the relevant radio button and then click the Apply which appears.
The second filter allows you to quickly filter race types between Turf, A/W, Chase, Hurdle or NHF, you can pick 1 or more of these by ticking the checkboxes next to each filter and then by clicking the Apply that appears.
Click here for the video tour of the quick filters
The advanced filters allow you to filter form and speed ratings by many fields.

This is the race card number of the horse which is shown on the saddle cloth. This is shown on the race card screen.
This is the Second Highest
Achieved Speed Rating. This is useful because the highest speed
figure a horse achieved may have been a flash in the pan, whereas the
Second highest speed figure is a more consistent measure of a horses best
performance.
HINT: Remember that when you change any filter the 2HA speed
figure may be affected because the race taken for the second highest rating
may be affected by the filters.
This is an abbreviation for ALL WEATHER. A/W racing is Flat racing, which is run on Fibresand or Polytrack and is held at three courses, Wolverhampton, Lingfield and Southwell. It is mainly over the winter months. Speed figures hold up very well at the A/W tracks because most races are very truly run affairs.
This is the Average Speed
Rating taken over X amount of races. The X amount or ratings can
be changed in the preferences screen, the default is 3 races, so the AVE(x)
rating would look at the last 3 races a horse ran in and take an average
of the 3 recorded speed figures. If a horse had only run twice then
the average would taken over the two races and if it had only run once
then the average would be that figure. The AVE(x) rating is a good
indicator or recent form, although remember a low speed figure does not
necessarily mean a poor performance, the race may have been run slowly
resulting in low figures for the entire field.
HINT: Remember that when you change any filter the AVE(x) speed
figures may be affected because the 3 races taken for the average may
be affected by the filters.
The actual going differs from the official going in that it is calculated from the going allowance recorded for the meeting that the race you are viewing was part of. The actual going is a much better representation of the going on the day the meeting took place, which also means it can be a much better pointer to what type of going a horse acts upon.
This is the age of the horse at the time it ran the race you are looking at.
A steeplechase run over fences on a jumps course.
This is the class of the race and ranges from A to H. From 1st September 2004 the classes will change and have an additional class value of the range 1 to 5 for flat races on turf and AW but will remain the same for jumps races.
This the race classification and can be one or more of the following:- Handicap, Maiden, Novice, Selling, Claiming, Classified, Nursery, Conditions, Auction, Apprentice, Amateur, Conditional Jockeys, Rated Stakes, Fillies, Mares, Juvenile, Median, Showcase, European Breeders Fund, Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Listed, Chase, Hurdle, NHF and Hunters Chase.
The classifications are abbreviations joined together by
dashes, below is a list of the classifications and the abbreviations that are
used for them
Handicap = Hcap
Maiden = Mdn
Novice = Nov
Selling = Sell
Claimer = Clm
Classified = Cla
Nursery = Nur
Conditions = Con
Auction = Auc

European Breeders Fund = EBF
Group 1 = Gp1
Group 2 = Gp2
Group 3 = Gp3
Grade 1 = Gr1
Grade 2 = Gr2

Listed = Lis
Chase = Cha
Hurdle = Hdle
National Hunt Flat Race = NHF
Hunter Chase = Hch
Class LTO, New Class LTO and Value LTO
Added in Class LTO (Last Time Out), New Class LTO and Value LTO to the race cards and results. It looks at the same type of code as race you are looking at and only looks at form prior to the race you are viewing.
This is the course the race was contested on.
This holds the course direction and characteristics i.e. LH for left handed, RH for right handed and then Galloping, Sharp, Flat etc.
Distance LTO
This shows the distance last
time out for the same code of racing as the race or day you are viewing.
This is the days since last run on a racetrack in the UK.
DSLR(F)
This is days since last run on the flat.
DSLR(J)
This is days since last run on the jumps.
Distance in Yards
The distance in yards is now on the Horse Form and Prior Form screens.
Distance in yards LTO
This is the distance in yards last time out.
Draw Impact Value
The draw impact value for the stall the
horse came from is now in the today's runners screen and the exporter.
This is the date the race occurred.
This is the distance in lengths back to the next horse in the race, it is on various screens.
This is the distance in lengths that the horse was behind the winner.
This is the race distance in furlongs, miles and yards.
The draw will be in green
if there is a significant advantage for this draw position and in red
for a significant disadvantage. If there draw is just in white then
there is no advantage either way.
When looking at a horse, if it as performed well from a bad draw (in red)
then it may be worth noting for a future race.
This is the amount returned for a Tote exacta bet placed on the first two horses home in the race.
This is the form string of the horses last 10 runs under any code of racing in the UK, it is though affected by filters so if you are exporting jumps races and have your filters set on the data view to only look at jumps form then this string will represent the form of the horse over jumps. The string reads right to left, i.e. the right most number is the most recent run. Also the year split is the beginning of each year i.e. 1st January.
Finished Races Strike Rate
This shows the percentage of Jumps races the horse as finished in races prior to the race or day you are viewing.
Graph
The graph can now be scrolled horizontally and vertically by
holding down the right mouse button within the graph and moving the mouse
up and down or left and right.
Use this in conjunction with graph zooming to zoom into different parts of
the graph.
To zoom on the graph hold down the left mouse button and drag a box from
left to right around the part of the graph you wish to zoom into.
You can then use the horizontal/vertical scrolling to move the zoomed
graph around.
To go back to full size just hold down the left mouse button and drag a
box from right to left.
The going allowance is created for each meeting from the times recorded that day after they have been adjusted by the Proform method for creating speed ratings. From the going allowance we then create the Proform Actual Going, this is a more accurate representation of the prevailing going on the day of the meeting in question.
This is the Highest Achieved
Speed Figure the horse as produced in it's career.
HINT: Remember that when you change any filter the HA speed
figure may be affected because the race taken for the highest rating may
be affected by the filters.
The history holds whether the horse is a course winner (C) or a distance winner (D) or a course and distance winner (CD) and also whether a beaten favourite (BF)
If the horse name is followed by brackets then they will contain the country of origin for the horse otherwise the horse is from the UK.
Hurdles races are run over smaller obstacles then Chase races.
Horse Stats Rating Rank
Top rated would be ranked number 1
Horse Sex
The abbreviations for the horse sex field are:-
m = Mare
f = Filly
c = Colt
g = Gelding
r = Rig
h = Entire
Horse Colour
The abbreviations for the horse colour field are:-
gr = Grey
br = Brown
ro = Roan
bl = Black
ch = Chestnut
b = Bay
Headgear
The headgear a horse is carrying is now on most screens and
in the exporter, the abbreviations are as follows and can be combinations
of any of them, also a 1 signifies the first time for the headgear shown:-
b = Blinkers
p = Cheek Pieces
es = Eye Shield
h = Hood
t = Tongue Tie
v = Visor
HC (Highest Class)
The HC field is a high class indicator field, it works like this :-
The software looks at the last x runs for the horse under the same code of
racing as today and notes the highest speed rating achieved in these x
runs, it then grabs the class of race that this speed rating was achieved
in, this is what is displayed in the column.
x runs can be changed in the preferences under the speed rating tab and
defaults to 3
It also works against filters set, so for instance with no filters set it
is looking at the last x races from the same racing code in races prior to
the race you are viewing and finds the highest speed rating and displays
the class of the race.
If you had filters set to ignore turf races and you were viewing a turf
race
then no HC class figures would be shown.
The filters will come into their own though if for instance you wanted to
split HC for say just hurdle races or just a AW race, so you could be
viewing a AW race and turn off all race types except AW, this would then
return HC for just AW races for last x runs etc
Obviously the filter options could be then endless, you could restrict to
goings, distances etc and get the HC back for the set filters.
Thanks to Michael for this useful idea to add into the software.
Impact values are used in the software in the Pace Ratings section and the Draw Statistics section. Lets take an example, the draw statistics for Beverley over 5f for a horse drawn 20 are 3 wins from 9 runs with a strike rate of 33% and a impact value of 6.67, this means that horses drawn 20 at Beverley are 6.67 times more likely to win than chance alone would dictate, whereas horses drawn 1 over the same course and distance have a record of 1 win from 46 runs with a strike rate of 2% and an impact value of 0.36, which means that horses drawn 1 only 0.36 times than chance alone would dictate. An impact value of 1 means that a horse wins as often as chance dictates.
The figure in square brackets
[] after a jockeys name is the number of days since the jockey had a winner
in all codes of racing in the UK.
If there is a figure in curly brackets {} then this is because the jockey
is an apprentice so gets a weight claim to come off the weight the horse
as to carry. The claiming weight is in pounds and ranges from 3
to 10 depending on how many winners an apprentice as ridden.
Jockey Stats Rating Rank
Top rated would be ranked number 1
This is the Speed Figure achieved
on the horses latest outing. The LTO
figure is a good indicator that a horse is in good form or returning to
form if coming on the back of some lower ratings but not higher than the
highest.
HINT: Remember that when you change any filter the LTO
speed figure may be affected because the race taken for the last time
out rating may be affected by the filters.
This is the Median Speed Figure
achieved by the horse taken over all of it's runs. The median figure
is the middle most rating of the horses ratings after they are sorted
lowest to highest, if there are an even number of ratings after sorting
then the median becomes the average of the middle two ratings, if there
is only one rating then the median is that rating. The MED
ratings is a good indicator of overall form.
HINT: Remember that when you change any filter the MED
speed figure may be affected because the races taken for the median ratings
may be affected by the filters.
This is the Median Speed Rating
taken over X amount of races. The X amount or ratings can be changed
in the preferences screen, the default is 3 races, so the MED(x)
rating would look at the last 3 races a horse ran in and take the middle
most rating after they are sorted lowest to highest, if there are an even
number of ratings after sorting then the median becomes the average of
the middle two ratings, if there is only one rating then the median is
that rating. The MED(x)
rating is a good indicator or recent form, although remember a low speed
figure does not necessarily mean a poor performance, the race may have
been run slowly resulting in low figures for the entire field.
HINT: Remember that when you change any filter the MED(x)
speed figures may be affected because the 3 races taken for the median
may be affected by the filters.
Main Rating Rank
Top rated would be ranked number 1
Main + Stats Rating Rank
Top rated would be ranked number 1
This stands for National Hunt Flat races. These are races run over the Hurdles course but the horses do not jump any Hurdles. They are used as an introduction to jump racing for younger National Hunt horses.
This stands for the Official Rating. This is the rating the official handicapper as given the horses and is adjusted by the official handicapper up or down after each race.
Official Rating Rank
Top rated would be ranked number 1
When looking at a race result the odds field contains the official SP the horse in question was returned at.
This is the official going that the track described the course on the day the races were run. This can vary wildly from the Actual Going as each course uses a different person and/or method of deciding what the going is for each meeting, which could be a very different opinion from person to person and course to course, so in our opinion you should use where possible the Actual Going that we provide for races that have been run, for a description of how this is calculated click here.
This is a field shown on the race results screen for each horse in each race and shows the Profit/Loss to a £1 stake that the horse as achieved since the race you are looking at.
The pace ratings and Pace
% are a guide as to how a race will be run. They are calculated
as follows :- we store pace abbreviations for each horse for every run
it has, they can be either L
for Led, P for Prominent or H for Held Up. Then to calculate a pace
rating for an upcoming race we look at the last 3 runs the horse had and
allocate points based on the pace abbreviation given as follows :- 4pts
for Led, 2pts for Prominent and 0pts for Held Up, so for instance if a
horse Led in all of it's last 3 runs it would get a points total of 12pts
or if it was Held up in one race, Led in another and was prominent in
the third race then it would get 6pts. The pace rating column on
the race card screen contains this total for each horse and from these
the pace percentage column is calculated.
To use these two columns is then simple, if a horse as a percentage of
higher than 33% then it is more than likely that it will lead and could
even get a soft lead. If there are two or 3 well clear of the rest
then one of these will likely lead.
Using these in conjunction with the pace details that are carried for each
course and distance along with the draw stats is a powerful tool.
This is a field shown on the race results screen for each horse in each race and shows the number of times the horse as placed since the race you are looking at.
Proform Form Rating
The Proform Form Rating calculates points based on the following information Going Strike Rate, Horse Strike Rate, Trainer/Jockey Strike Rate, Trainer Strike Rate, Jockey Strike Rate, VDW, Last 3 Runs, Trainer Course Strike Rate, Jockey Course Strike Rate, Class Movement, Course Distance Winners, Trainer/Jockey Course Strike Rate, Speed Ratings.
PRC1, PRC2, PRC3 and PRCAV
These are class indicators
PRC1 is last run on same race type as today, i.e. turf, aw, chase, hurdle, nhf and is calculated using a class weighting number, the finishing position and no of runners in last race.
PRC2 is 2 runs ago
PRC3 is 3 runs ago
and PRCAV is the average of the three above.
This is the finishing position of the horse and is shown on any screen which gives a result for a race.

This can be either AW, Turf, Chase, Hurdle or NHF
This is shown on the results screen for any horse and is the Proform Speed Rating the horse achieved in the race you are looking at.
This is shown on the results screens and is the number of runners that ran in the race.
Ratings - Form and Statistical Ratings Fields Explained
The ratings are on the following screens and in the exporter, Racecard, Horse
Form, Prior Form, Post Form and Today's Runners.
The fields are:-
Main - This is the main rating from the Top 2 Rated product and is
calculated from many of the other fields on the racecard, it uses the
Tissue Rating, VDW Rating, Official Rating, MR(X) Speed Rating, DSLR,
Strike Rate, Proform Form Rating and the weight difference between last
two runs on same code of racing.
Main Stats - This is the Main Rating + the Stats
Rating.
Stats - The stats rating is made up of 4 other ratings which are
also on the above screens. The Stats rating is the total of the 4
ratings below.
Trn Stats - This is the trainers statistical rating and is

VDW is based on the number of wins for the horse divided by the win prize
money it gained from these. The VDW is for all career races prior to the race date you are viewing and is also based on the same type of race you
are looking at, so if your are viewing a flat race the VDW is for flat/AW

for Chase/Hurdle/NHF (( win prize money / win) / 100).

prior to the race you are viewing so that research can be used.
